Elyria woman Dorothy Fectenko, 31, died at Elyria Memorial Hospital after a rear end crash on Rt. 57 near Griswold Road. William Nick Burns, 37, of 318 12th St., father of five, was arraigned on traffic manslaughter and leaving the scene charges. he pleaded innocent to manslaughter. Burns was jailed on bond, with license suspended for three years. An alert motorist aided in identifying Burns two hours after the crash.
A grain plant near a turnpike interchange suffered extensive damage from a series of blasts. Authorities traced the incident to the loss of control by the plant’s guards as alarms sounded and a car entered the northbound lane. The blast left over 100 thousand dollars in damage and exposed 60 bushels of grain stored in the elevators.
An all out land and air search was launched for the balloon Small World after reports it landed about 22 miles southeast of Pedernales in Venezuela’s Delta Amacuro. Four English crew members were aboard. a storm halted air search as rescue teams prepared to join overland patrols amid jungle conditions and uncertain terrain.
Cincinnati dispatch reports Reverend Maurice McCrackin, a pacifist pastor, jailed six months in the Allenwood federal prison in Pennsylvania after failing to answer an appeal. He has refused to pay federal income taxes for 10 years, saying funds would be used for war arms. The case involves re investigation and notes his opposition to the Cuban conflict and government actions.
Holiday motorists faced a deadly four day period as officials dreaded a repeat of a black Christmas. The National Safety Council warned the rate remained above the 1956 holiday record of 712 deaths, with a UPI tally at 9 AM showing 363 fatalities halfway through the period.

Safety officials optimistic before weekend that deaths would stay under 620 total, but weather and fast driving increased risk. In Chicago, 70 drunk drivers were removed from streets by Friday, and high speed crashes spurred revised grim outlook.
Gov Michael V. DiSalle names Mrs Mary Gorman of Cincinnati as Director of Public Welfare, completing 8 of his 10 cabinet posts. Gorman, wife of Robert N Gorman, will assume after the Jan 12 inauguration. Also named were Margaret Mahoney to Industrial Relations and other posts expected to be filled soon.
Paris reports indicate France will devalue the franc today as part of sweeping reforms likely to affect Western Europe. Premier de Gaulle and Finance Minister Pinay prepared announcements after cabinet sessions, with British plans for currency action tied to the franc’s new value.
A passerby heard David Fralick calling Donald Duck and located a wandering pet that had been missing. The finder, initially thinking the duck was wild, returned it to the boy’s family.
