White Christmas Grips Elyria Area With Frigid Cold

A frigid white Christmas left Lorain County residents bundled up as snow squalls hit the northeastern Ohio region. Thermometers dipped below zero with wind chills around 45 below, while sun helped little. Ohio Edison reported no outages during the holiday and 487 notices went out for nonpayment risk. More snow and travel advisories followed as counties east of Cleveland faced 5 to 8 inches and poor visibilities from blowing snow.

Centralized exhaust testing urged by Ohio EPA official

Virginia Aveni deputy director of the Ohio EPA urged a centralized testing program with a single contractor to conduct auto emissions tests across Ohio. The federal government threatens to withhold highway funds if the program fails, and Lorain Cuyahoga and three other counties face a May 1986 deadline. Service-station operators would need about $30,000 to offer testing plus a $10,000 analyzer, with dealers also facing extra costs.

Residents sue to stop oil private jail project in Sheffield

More than 200 Sheffield Village residents filed suit in Lorain County Common Pleas Court to block a proposed 100 bed private jail by THE CORINTHIAN Corp. of Berea claiming the $3.5 million minimum security facility violates village zoning. The site at French Creek Road and Route 2 is alleged to be industrial park zoning not permitting a detention center. Westlake attorneys Glavinos and Gogul represent the residents. The case seeks to stop construction begun after land purchase in September.

3000 Toys Collected for Elyria Salvation Army Drive

Elyria Chronicle Telegram notes the Not-Forgotten Box collected over 3000 toys and games, short of the 7000 goal. Capt. Deborah Goforth says every child received something. volunteers include Jeffrey Haskins 8, Dee Wohldnwe, John Fitzgerald 8, and many local workers and families. The effort, aided by Elyria Service Workers Local 277 and others, distributed baskets and toys, with final counts pending.
