Christmas day passed quietly in the city with many family reunions and crowded streets and trains. The picture show did record business while arcades and billiard rooms were filled. Churches held services and evening exercises with programs and gifts for children. A white Christmas marked by gratitude to hospital staff and nurses.
Firemen were presented with gifts after Christmas by a range of local businesses and individuals. Givers included Rubber Co., Elyria Theatres, Iron Co., Ford Leomts, D. Freese, A. L. Garfort, and others, with items such as cigars, cigars, cigars and assorted treats.
An appreciative note from prisoners at Lorain Jewish facility thanks Sheriff Brdkus and his wife for a Christmas dinner served to all inmates. The writeup notes tobacco and papers were present but mentions the act as a kindness and includes memories of help from Salvation Army and others.
A hospital celebration featured carols sung by a patient choir and a young people’s group from the Firat Congregational. Mr and Mrs Harold led violin accompaniment as nurses received gifts from a tree decorated with a generous Christmas spirit.
Local stores rewarded long service with Christmas cash presents. Mercantile Co. gave sizable cash to employees with one year of service despite large losses that week. Woolworths distributed $5 per year of service to staff with five years or less, including Marian Wogley Esther McVey Judita Diedrich George Wratten Myrtle Schrock Elsie Bongs and Vinola Jackson.
The mayor was honored on Christmas Day by several local businesses. The Candy Kitchens, Paradise Grill, Valassis & Charubar, and John Grumbas at the White Palace sent gifts. He neither smokes nor drinks and received no such items.
New York publishers will raise Sunday paper prices to ten cents in country districts by January 1 after a House committee plea to cut newsprint use by one percent. The American Newspaper Publishers Association announced the move, with all but two NYC papers increasing rates and most opting out of editions on Christmas or New Year’s Day.
In Washington Pennsylvania an accidental powder blast at Herbert Waters house killed his daughter Telina Waters and fatally injured Waters his wife and a man named Thomas. The blast occurred when Waters tossed damp powder into a fire causing a report and the house to burn.
Mt Clemens Michigan authorities report no progress in solving the early Wednesday murder of J Stanley Brown whose body with four bullet holes was found near town. Police questioned several people including Brown's close associates. no value information was secured. Multiple motives are being considered in the investigation.
Countess Rawita Ostrawska, director of the Polish Red Cross in Siberia and wife of the Polish high commissioner to Siberia, arrives in the United States to raise $100,000 to transport 3,000 wounded Polish soldiers from northern Russia. The Polish Red Cross lacks funds and the American Red Cross is aiding civilians.
Canton Ohio December 26 Associated Press says 14 year old Alby Adams is under arrest for arson after confessing to burning three barns. He told detectives his motive was that his father would not move to Canton and he hoped the arson would force the move. The confession indicates losses to owners totaling about 25000 dollars.
Mount Clemens Michigan December 26 an arrest in the killing of J. Stanley Brew who was found shot to death in his car near here is expected today according to Sheriff William Caldwell.
The death of B. L. Leamon 26 of 245 Fourth street followed a long tuberculosis illness. A railroad track foreman with the New York Central for ten years he was an Odd Fellow. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. I. H. Lehman, brother M. H. Lehman, and sister Edna Lehman. Funeral services Sunday at 2 p.m. at the family home conducted by Rev. W. J. Smith of the U P church.
The Morne residence at 115 Chapel Street was rocked by an Eas explosion at 4 14 this morning. A stranger named John O Leary, working locally, was badly burned and rushed to Memorial hospital where his condition improved slowly. Fire destroyed a bed and damaged the house, with property worth several hundred dollars owned by Mrs S B Day.
Beginning January 1 the Chronicle Telegram will raise mail rates for Tearain county subscribers to 1 per year 2.25 for six months 1.25 for three months and 30c for one month. Outside Lorain county within the state price is 4 per year and elsewhere 1.
Berlin dispatch reports the Austrian social democracy central board sending world appeals to the United States, England, France and Italy urging steps to halt alleged executions of communists and socialists in Hungary. It claims about 3 hundred victims under Bela Kun regime plus over three thousand executed by Crufthead court martial on flimsy warrants.
Snow slides at Davos, Switzerland strike sanitarium and hotels, killing a Russian woman and nurse, two hotel workers, and five in a building. Six avalanches sweep from the Schahorn, damaging walls, wires, and blocking trains as Christmas festivities are cancelled and winter sports halted. A French infant survives a near miss in a collapsed room.
The Hungarian peace delegation led by Count Albert Apponyi travels to Neuilly near Paris to receive the Hungarian peace treaty. Apponyi is a longtime leader in Hungarian affairs.
Miss Lillian Sears ends twenty five years at Flyrna high school with a year’s leave and move to Lakewood Ohio to settle there. Pupils and teachers praise her kindness, announce farewell events, and note her popular teaching in the machine shop and other subjects.
The United States Shipping Board announced that the former German Imperial group ships in New York harbor are to be delivered to Great Britain. The Imperator has already been handed over and other vessels will follow under armistice terms. No action on a proposed shared use was taken and the transfer was ordered by the President.
Cleveland reports a major shift as about five thousand striking workers prepare to vote at a mass meeting on whether to return to work or stay out until steel companies recognize the union. Indications favor a unanimous decision to end the walkout.
Washington Dee 2 Ninety eight percent of the thousand railway machinists voted in November to strike with other trades if Congress enacted the Cummins Hapluad Bill with anti strike provisions. International Association of Machinists President Johnston said the vote was taken before the Senate Interstate Commerce Committee reported the bill. He noted the strike would involve railway machinists only if the measure became law.
In Chicago on December 26 Olaf Johnson aged 83 E Jacobson 77 Bolica died from suspected poisoning after being found unconscious on a floor with a bag open nearby. The trio who sailed Before the Mast from Briorway over fifty years ago had retired six years ago and moved to the city. They died at the hospital after a visitor found them unconscious with a bag of substance spilling.
YW. G. Krugman of Clark Street sold his grocery business to Harry Havens and retired after four years of steady operation. Health issues forced the decision, and Krugman plans a period of rest.
In Toledo two men identified as members of a six-man gang who raided Lucas county jail, freed ten prisoners and shot a deputy were captured at 5:45 am after their car stalled on The Point Place road three miles from the jail. Joseph Murphy and Joseph Snyder surrendered. Snyder was reportedly on bond after a cabaret shooting. Police chase continues for the remaining escapees.
Dec 26 report says Toledo county jail guards learned of a plan to free inmate Big Jim Morton and others. Sheriff Hanratty placed deputies on duty after tips of an escape attempt. detectives stopped an eastbound train suspect and recovered a revolver. An Associated Press dispatch notes further investigation in Cleveland and Toledo.
