Woman launches nonprofit artisan co op in Cleveland
Ruth DeGolia, a Yale graduate from Cleveland Heights, started Mercado Global after a Guatemala trip exposed her to poverty. The organization links Guatemalan indigenous women in rural cooperatives to U.S. markets, paying decent wages and funding schooling and clinics. DeGolia hires her classmate to help raise funds and markets the crafts online and via catalog.
