Presidential visit brings cheer to Camp Lejeune
President Clinton toured Camp Lejeune amid a year of misfortune for the base including a fatal helicopter crash and two hurricanes. Marine Corey Vaughn and others welcomed the commander in chief who delivered holiday wishes and helped Toys for Tots donations. Camp Lejeune houses about 42,000 Marines and sailors.

Houston blast at Wyman Gordon plant kills eight
An explosion at the Wyman Gordon Forging Co plant near Houston killed at least eight workers as they prepared to shut down for the holidays. One person was missing and two were injured in stable condition. The blast damaged the roof and walls, flinging body parts up to 100 yards. Local officials and company counsel noted the cause was not yet known. The plant employs about 1,200 workers making pipe for power and chemical plants and forged metal parts.

Virginia plane crash kills six on maintenance flight
An Airborne Express DC-8 crashed during a maintenance test near NARROWS Virginia killing all six aboard. The crew included five Airborne Express employees from Ohio and North Carolina and a Triad International Maintenance worker from North Carolina.
