Rail Passenger Traffic Cut Seen After Holidays
Government plans curbs on rail passenger service after the holidays to conserve coal as miners press a three day work week. ICC Chairman J Monroe Johnson warned an order directing coal burning railroads to limit operations may come next week if no settlement emerges. The measure may extend to freight if shortages persist and emergency powers loom amid bickered contract talks with United Mine Workers.

Truman May Seek Cuts in Wartime Excise Taxes
Washington reports quote administration aides advising President Truman to push for repeal or reduction of wartime excise taxes. They deem it politically smart, arguing Congress will cut them anyway, perhaps vetoing if needed. He may seek reductions with offsetting tax increases, likely from corporate levies, amid 1950 election year constraints. The push targets 1943 excises still renew ed postwar, though some items like admission tickets and liquor may stay.
