Christmas Mail Volume Rises in Elyria Despite Rate Hikes
Elyria postmaster Michael Lotko reports Christmas mail volume exceeded last year despite postage rising to 13 cents this year. As of today 4,674,000 pieces were processed versus 3,873,000 last year, with peak volume on Monday December 20 and a 900 foot backlog equaling about 150,000 pieces. More than five million pieces were processed in 1969.

J R Construction Co of Elyria led four story addition bids totaling 5 434 229 for Elyria Memorial Hospital with a $2 928 400 general contract. Electrical work went to Higgins Electric of Elyria for 886 829 and Spahn Corp of Cleveland bid 1 274 500 for mechanical work. Structural steel went to Patterson and George of Mentor at 344 500. Contracts await funding and February award, construction to begin March 1 with service by fall 1978.

Akron High School player dies after game collision
Warren (UPI) An 18 year old Akron Buchtel High School basketball player Wayne Johnson died last night after colliding with a teammate during a fast break at Warren Harding Fieldhouse. Johnson reportedly was knocked unconscious and died at Trumbull Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. Coroner said death resulted from asphyxiation after vomiting, with unusual food in the stomach. No other injuries or heart trouble observed.
