In Des Moines, Prof Arthur H. Compton of the University of Chicago will attend the annual convention of the American Association for the Advancement of Science on November 27. He is noted for his work on neutron gamma ray measurement and the discovery of total reflection of X rays and will discuss flood control for navigable waters and a national cloud control program proposed to Congress.
The first session of the National Flood Control Congress will be held in Memphis from April 14 to 16 next year. About 15,000 people from across the United States are expected to attend to gather facts on flood control and related measures.
Bourdh Tov a Greek born cotton and silk merchant in Dover England paid a $500 fine after officials found him wearing silk slips between his shirt and undershirt to keep warm. He explained the cold compelled the unusual garb and that the slips were silk.
In Spencer on December 23 the W T U met at Mrs. Courdray’s home with strong attendance. Topics covered publicity experiences, county and social publicity, and planning for public meetings. Church bells to ring Jan 16 for prohibition’s tent birthday. Plans to pack a Christmas box for disabled soldiers and sew bed-pockets. A bake sale raised funds. Visitors included Mrs. Lydia Daugherty and Miss Evelyn Allen. Local residents moved, a farm sale by Dan Streich occurred, and a Christmas Eve program was arranged at the Methodist church.
