Amherst Mayor Marvin R. Davis dismissed Police Chief Arthur H. Koppenhafer effective Dec 22 1969 citing collusion and retaliatory action in a disputed reinstatement. Capt Edward R. Kobal named acting chief as Koppenhafer must surrender city property.
Les Gillispie and his wife bought a Christmas tree in Columbus and found a note from Adele Perry, a 12 year old girl with cerebral palsy in Merigomish Nova Scotia. Adele asked for a sweater size 14 and the couple confirmed the note’s authenticity with Adele’s mother. They plan to send gifts and believe the tree was meant for them.
Major Weston T. Smith 34, veteran with 16 medals, earned the Air Force Cross for heroism as a forward air controller in Vietnam near BenHet. Flying an unarmed craft, he directed attacks on artillery and hidden positions despite his plane being hit. He later served at Ft. Sill teaching firepower coordination and has multiple other decorations. He is married to Shirley and previously taught at Bowling Green State University.
Bernadette Devlin, 22, the youngest British MP, was sentenced to six months for incitement to riot and riotous behavior during August inter religious riots in Londonderry. Nine other charges were dismissed. She posted 60 dollars bailed.
U S Rep Charles A Mosher says the tax reform bill, while flawed, contains important improvements and will be voted for in the House. Senator Saxbe urges Nixon to veto, calling the measure folly, as the conference committee finalizes the bill with a 15 percent Social Security raise and small tax exemption tweaks.
Ridgeville Republican candidate Richard Glauner plans to appeal a Lorain County Common Pleas Court ruling that he cannot be seated on Ward 1 council. Attorney Robert J. Corts said filing notice of appeal and a quick hearing before the Ninth Circuit in Akron are planned while the tie vote result remains unresolved.
