White Christmas Possible in Ohio as Snow Arrives

Ohio faces a late winter blast with up to two inches of snow and gusty north winds. The Weather Bureau notes winter began Monday night but mild temps lingered. a consistent cold snap is expected for four days with a high in the 40s and lows 15 to 25, snow continuing through Friday and a warmer Sunday.

Former Sheffield Youth Dies After Moving Van Accident

Delmont Charles Weller 16, formerly of Sheffield, died at a Daytona Beach hospital from injuries in a freak mishap on a moving truck. He was riding on the truck when a mattress shifted and knocked him to the road. Surviving are his mother Leota Winkler, of Port Orange Florida, and Charles Welter of Avon, his parents, and Nick Ricci and wife, Sheffield grandparents. The father and grandmother left for Florida by plane to arrange funeral details.

Police search for two men in the apparent love triangle slaying of 40 year old Daisy Stallworth who was stabbed to death with a small knife on Monday in Cincinnati.

Man Killed By Auto In Hamilton Crash

Bert Harris, 25, of Hamilton was struck by a car Monday and killed in the incident. Authorities report the crash occurred on a city street with emergency responders on the scene. Harris was known locally for prior community work and had no known witnesses to the crash.

Six or eight killed in barge blast at Point Pleasant

An empty gasoline barge exploded on the Ohio River during cleaning. Six were confirmed dead and two others possibly missing. The blast tore a 30 by 10 foot deck section, sent debris onto the riverbank, and caused fear as communities and families gathered for news.

Levy Defeat Cited As Council Refuses Wage Boosts

City council closed out year end business amid talk of a new real estate tax after the defeated two mill operating levy. The finance committee blocked municipal pay raises and halted expansion of the city garage to avoid jail cell crowding. Mayor Police Chief Lose Court Payments

A flareup between Mayor Henry W. Ault and Police Chief James E. Boggs revealed about 2700 dollars in court cost payments this year. Of that total 2145 dollars went to Ault’s salary and 5480 dollars to Boggs, with both figures covering the first 11 months of 1953. The dispute arose after a city council meeting when Boggs accused Councilman Dale Kellogg of opposing raises for city workers. The state legislature had redirected these fees to city funds, a move Boggs argued should be reimbursed to him. He had requested the money be made up, a request the finance committee refused. Charges Cables Intercepted By State Dept Reds

Bus Terminal In Elyria To Close After January

Alfred Alten announced the Elyria Bus Terminal will cease operations after January 1. The Second Street center, open 2.5 years, will be torn down for off street parking and new lines Greyhound Lorain City and Grafton have not announced new locations. The terminal will no longer serve as a focal point for bus companies.

Truck Hit By Car Injures Avon Lake Man Seriously

Avon Lake resident Robert Miller age 45 was seriously injured when his truck for Individual Laundry Co. was struck by John Gibson of Lakewood near 1486 Bradley Road North of Detroit Road Miller sustained injuries including four fractured vertebrae a broken pelvic bone head injuries and multiple leg and ankle fractures He was driving back to the Lakewood laundry and signaled a left turn but the other driver apparently did not see him Miller father of three had worked at the laundry about 13 years and is hospitalized after a restless night

Bellefontaine area reports Elmer Milo Brown, 53, died Monday from injuries sustained in a two car crash on Route 33 near Bellefontaine Sunday. Police said other driver suffered injuries and is hospitalized.
