Shortage Of Scrap Steel To Cause Shutdowns
Cleveland dispatch notes a severe scrap steel shortage threatening shutdowns across foundries during the Christmas holidays to build raw material stocks. Steel magazine predicts demand will outpace supply into 1948 with heavy tonnage carryovers and continued demand, though easing may start in the second half of 1948. Prices held steady with spot rises in pig iron and plate amid a near full capacity utilization of steelmaking at 97.4 percent.
