Economy rides high then cools amid housing slide
The economy grew 4.9 percent in the July to September quarter, driven by strong GDP despite a housing market crash. Builders cut housing spending 20.5 percent annualized in Q3, with foreclosures rising and credit woes likely cooling growth to about 1.5 percent or less in Q4. Analysts warn of recession risks as Greenspan and Bernanke face policy criticism amid the mortgage crisis.

Mall owner sues two more tenants at Midway Mall
Centro Watt, owner of Midway Mall in Elyria, filed two rent lawsuits in county Common Pleas Court against The Game Room arcade and Gold Valley jewelry store. The suits claim rent arrears of about 35,000 and 18,000 respectively, bringing total rent disputes for the year to five. Gold Valley’s Suny Lakhani said he has paid what he could and that mall management suggested possible rent adjustments, while noting slow business. Attempts to reach Centro Watt and its lawyer were not returned.

Aid to jobless hits Ohio trust fund crisis
Ohio faces a shrinking unemployment fund as job losses drain the balance from 2.3 billion in 2000 to 555.7 million by November. If a recession repeats 2001–04, the fund could be broke by year end 2008, prompting higher employer taxes and reduced benefits for unemployed workers. William Burga cites general economic decline as the main cause.
