More denied pardon for Henry VIII era martyr
London AP reports Home Secretary James Callaghan refused a posthumous pardon for Sir Thomas More, beheaded in 1535 for treason after refusing to recognize Henry VIII as head of the church. Benjamin Whitaker had urged a pardon before a Westminster Hall plaque unveiling next year. More served as Lord Chancellor after Wolsey and his life inspired A Man for All Seasons.
