National League Umpire Dies After Operation
Charles Rigler a 53 year old veteran National League umpire died after surgery for a brain tumor in Philadelphia. A Massillon Ohio native he began umpiring in 1904 at age 22 in the Central Ohio league and joined the National League in 1906, serving until his death except 1923 when he supervised oil land lease work. He retired as an active umpire just a week before.
