War fraud suits and a whitewashing controversy surround Fatty Arbuckle films with civic leaders and women groups opposing a return to local screens. Mayor and theater officials indicate no contracts will bring Arbuckle back, while comments from Laughry and Lower reflect ongoing resistance.
Tomorrow marks the last school day before holidays with a Tuesday January 2 return. Grade schools host afternoon Christmas programs while the high school holds Christmas exercises at 1 45 in the chapel auditorium. In Chicago a wealthy Rochester, N C man connected with a banking house died in a hotel. A bottle of carbolic acid was near him and the body was found this afternoon. The man, JFE Stewart, had been in the business two years ago and was rumored to be under strain following a failed venture. GC Mather of St. Louis mentioned in relation to the case.
William Cairns aged 67 of Lakewood formerly headed Elyria Iron and Steel Co. and later held an executive post with Detroit Pressed Steel Co. He died suddenly Tuesday in St. Petersburg Florida from heart trouble while attending a Clevelanders ball. Survived by widow a son Alfred Cairns Cleveland and three daughters Mrs Irving Morrison Elyria Mrs Seward Gamble and Miss Catherine Cairns Cleveland. No funeral plans announced.
The revival in American business lifts optimism on Wall Street with larger year end bonuses. Banks and brokers prepare payouts from six to 25 percent of salaries amid improved trade conditions, with firms like Corn Exchange Bank Guaranty Trust New York Empire Trust and Henry Clews & Company planning dispersals.
Senator Borah proposed in the Senate the calling of a world economic and disarmament conference by President Harding to restore sound financial and business conditions. New York City shows the lowest suicide rate among major cities while San Diego leads per capita deaths by self harm in 1921. Dr Fred L. Hoffman of Prudential notes San Diego at 487 per 140,600 and New York at 179 per 100,000. San Francisco Spokane Los Angeles and Louisville follow in that sequence.
Columbus dispatch reports Mike Nuen formerly of Latchford Township Huron County now near Oberlin planned to burn his barn for cash. He tried to burn a $1000 barn for $800 and a house. both vacant. Nuen confessed saying he needed the money and was bound over on $2000 after pleading guilty. the fire occurred December 2 at 30 p. m.
Fifteen Columbus egg dealers are arrested on charges under the cold storage law. Warrants were sworn for 13 grocers by Inspector Lindsey of the state department of agriculture. They face arraignment in municipal court today.
Robert Resch, 20, went to a police station in Chicago early today and confessed to shooting his father, Joseph Resch, during a domestic dispute. Police found Joseph dead with two bullet wounds to the heart. furniture lay overturned in a disturbed room.
Seth Anderson, 35, a department manager at First National Bank in Chicago, is under arrest for embezzling about 76 000 dollars. He reportedly admitted to $35 600 in falsified entries after bank officials presented evidence. his wife insists on his innocence. Anderson, with 20 years at the bank, was once a model employee.
South Amherst December 21 fire of unknown origin destroyed a building owned and occupied by John Radich and his wife Anna. Both were severely burned with Mrs Radich receiving the worst injuries and later hospitalized. The blaze erupted around midnight, neighbors woke the couple in time to save her life. The fire destroyed the entire building and contents with an estimated loss of about 2509 dollars amid a background of a recent divorce suit between the spouses.
In Chicago a raid on a variamental wine shop ended with three intoxicated bandits captured and three fleeing after a pitched revolver battle with police. Twenty or more shots were exchanged in the confrontation.
The Lorain County Automobile club annual meeting met in the basement of the Congregational church. Joyce McKinley danced. a buffet was served. speakers discussed street improvements, traffic, and the impact of autos on transit and pedestrians. Directors were chosen and will meet in January to elect officers.
Columbus December 21 The conference of city law officers named a committee to draft a proposed state traffic code and a uniform city traffic ordinance to curb traffic evils. The group will hold a meeting early next month and appoint subcommittees.
In Cleveland this afternoon three people were injured when a street car struck another amid slippery tracks. About twenty passengers rode in the two cars at the time.
Marion Illinois December 21 Hugh Willis member of the state board of the United Mine Workers testified in the Herrin power house woods murder trial that he joined the mob before the 14 Lester strip mine captives were shot. Other witnesses described gun and shell purchases and Willis arrival as part of a conspiracy to murder. Meanwhile federal suits against United States Harness Company of Ransom West Virginia and Bridgeport Brass Company of Bridgeport Connecticut are being prepared by the justice department. Government actions concern surplus contract sales and potential settlements within thirty days.
Brady Whyde, an inmate serving for robbery, was arrested yesterday at his sister's home in Newark Ohio and is held for delivery to the Ohio Penitentiary. Whyde escaped from the penitentiary while working at the OS U stadium on August 15.
