Donald Trump secured the presidency when Texas electors cast votes to push him over 270 electoral votes. Clinton led the national popular vote by almost 3 million, but Trump won key states to claim the win. Official certification and joint session set for January 6.
Wellington The Wellington school board is poised to formally hire Edward Weber as superintendent after a public meet and greet with two other finalists. Weber currently leads the Cleveland High School of Science and Medicine, bringing a decade of principal experience and a track record of student success. Interim leader Tom Tucker will guide the transition as the board votes on the contract at 6 p.m. in the Westwood Elementary School cafeteria.
Lorain City Council defeated a proposal to cut salaries of elected officials by 15 percent in a 9 to 2 vote. Councilwoman Mary Springowski defended the plan saying sacrifices are needed amid rising living costs and budget strain from higher property taxes, higher license fees, and potential water sewer rate increases. Only Springowski and Dennis Flores supported the measure as the city works to close a $3.6 million gap.
Elyria city employees not covered by the AFSCME union will receive a 2 percent pay raise. The adjustment matches a past pattern where raises for unionized staff are mirrored for nonbargaining employees whose wages City Council sets. It ends a three year gap with a 2016-17 contract year raise approved by Council.
Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission approved a 121.4 million capital budget for 2017 to replace or resurface bridge decks and a section of the Lorain County toll road. Bridges over Dean Quarry and West River roads will be rebuilt, and a deck over an abandoned railroad at 138.2 miles will be removed.
