Middle-age hypertension linked to impaired thinking later in life
CHICAGO AP Men with high blood pressure in mid life are more likely to have trouble thinking and remembering in old age, a study of 3735 Japanese American men shows. Each 1 point rise in mid life systolic pressure raised risk of poor cognition by 9 percent, with higher pressures increasing danger. Lead author Lenore Launer of NIA and collaborators from University of Hawaii and Netherlands reported in JAMA. Neuropsychologist Sandra Weintraub notes the study supports clinical expectations about cognitive risk from hypertension. Cognitive function was scored on a 100 point scale through standardized testing.
