Pair forms company to shield transfers in BMW funds

The Chronicle-Telegram reports that two former BMW executives formed a company to hide money transfers. Sources allege a company check exceeding 130000 sits with federal prosecutors in Dayton, while funds were moved from state tax accounts to privately held savings, with interest kept by the pair and later redirected to BMW accounts and local-government distributions.

Elyria Memorial Hospital to raise rates by 5.8 percent

Elyria Memorial Hospital will increase rates by an average 5.8 percent starting January 1. Officials cite a 16 percent rise in non payroll costs, $753,000 in new depreciation and interest for a four story addition, and about $900,000 in a wage hike package for all employees. The hike, the smallest this decade, aligns with the Carter administration’s wage price guidelines. The current 1978 rates reflect a 13.5 percent rise over 1977.

Israel strikes Lebanon bases in retaliation for attacks

Israeli warplanes hit three suspected guerrilla bases in southern Lebanon for about fifteen minutes, two along the coast, claiming very good results. In New Delhi an Indian Airlines jet bound for New Delhi was hijacked and forced to land in Benares with 126 passengers and six crew aboard, all reported safe.

Lorain lands Republic Steel dock facility for ore

Republic Steel Corp will use Lorain as its Lake Erie terminal for iron ore shipments. The project, part of a 200 million modernization plan, includes a continuous slab caster at Cleveland works and is expected to create about 50 local jobs with roughly seven to eight million tons of material moved annually. Construction could start in April with the dock operating by early to mid 1980. Community benefits include increased trade and an estimated 7 million dollars in annual wages. officials discuss land needs, bonds, and tax abatements.

Republic steel modernization to create up to 100 jobs in Cleveland

Republic Steel Corp plans a 200 million modernization centered on a continuous slab caster in Cleveland. The project aims to expand capacity for the 1980s, requiring hundreds of construction workers and 40 to 100 operators once completed over a three year build. A new iron ore receiving dock at Lorain Harbor was also announced to serve mills in Cleveland Warren and Youngstown with no cost set.

Cleveland Mayor and foe agree on ballot plan to save city

Cleveland Mayor Dennis Kucinich and Council President George Forbes reached a compromise to place on the ballot the sale of the Municipal Light Plant and a hike of the city income tax from 1 to 1.5 percent. The move aims to lift the city from default on 15.5 million in bank notes and avert mass layoffs, including about half of police and fire personnel.

The Not-Forgotten Box near Lorain County races toward a 3000 toy goal as Capt. Gary Long of the Salvation Army notes a current tally of 2183 after a 406 toy pickup. Donors include Elyria Firefighters Local 474, Home E Club Clearview High School, Bobbie Scages, Elyria Telephone Co, Elyria Woman's Club, Moose Lodge 778 groups, and Amherst Mayor Anthony DePaola who presents 32 dollars. Santa arrived at the CT to hand out candy canes to children on site.
