Doubt They Will Live Two Siamese Twin Boys
INDIANAPOLIS Mr and Mrs Edward R Speer of Bedford Ind face a two week decision about their Siamese twins joined at the tops of their heads Doctors say if the boys survive the period they may be ready for discharge from James Whitcomb Riley Hospital But the Speers refuse to take the babies home while they remain joined and doctors warn an operation would be fatal as brain tissue is shared Authorities say the couple could be charged with non support if they do not seek care The Speers say they cannot afford the needed long term care and hoped for a state hospital but none exists for such cases Doctors oppose separation arguing ethics prevent futile surgery They have not yet seen the twins
