The Elyria City Council passed an ordinance routing trucks and trailers over six tons away from most residential streets. Effective January 17 after a 30 day referendum, the rules designate main streets as truck routes based on surveys by police officials.
Winter storms force most of Lora County schools to close leaving only Avon and Avon Lake open for in person classes. Weather forecasts predict continued cold and a new storm bringing snow, icing and travel hazards across the state.
County Sanitary Engineer Lester Osborne announced that property owners on Lafayette Garford and Ridgewood streets in Vincent may obtain permits to connect to the mains. He noted schools in Oberlin Amherst and Wellington operate with reduced attendances as bus service is curtailed and many county schools are expected to stay closed tomorrow due to frigid weather and more snow.
The Salvation Army reports 966 dollars raised at the kettle after three days of operation near the Kresge store. A 242.50 contribution yesterday pushed totals above 966. Ki-Queens volunteers aided in cold weather. Elyria Police, Rotary Club, and El Rey Grotto covered shifts today. Final basket applications are due tomorrow with adult requests to Salvation Army headquarters on Broad Street.
About 400 Girl Scouts from the Flyrna area planned a Christmas carol sing in Ely Park tomorrow evening at 7 p m. Cold weather forced last Friday's postponement and will determine if tomorrow's event goes ahead or is postponed due to extreme conditions.
Forecast calls for drifting heavy snow and wind with about three inches of new snow this afternoon. High around 32 this afternoon, colder tonight with additional snow about two inches and wind. Tonight's low near 10, Wednesday brings more snow and much colder conditions. Large Christmas tree sale details appear with local merchants and society notices.
Henry W. Grunewald is subpoenaed to testify Thursday before House Ways and Means investigators about an alleged 500000 tax shake down involving ex-Capone attorney Abraham Teitelbaum. Adrian DeWind said Grunewald is under subpoena and will be questioned in a closed session if able.
Safety service director Dan W Kothe says cars left on streets impede snow clearing and will be towed by the city with owners paying charges. He notes noncompliant owners forced the measure after many failed to move vehicles, risked equipment, and now owners must contact police if a car is missing.
City council held a busy session approving zoning revisions along West River Street and near Filbert. D. W. Kothe to hire canvassers for a three day citywide garbage survey. Equipment for the sanitation department is arriving. operation expected January 1. objections voiced by Magyar Evangelical Church over commercial zoning near its 35 year old church with $50 000 investment.
Communist authorities delivered 11 559 Allied prisoners and 3 198 U S inmates to UN delegates at an armistice subcommittee meeting in Korea. Ridgway said total missing Americans may be about 6 000 with 2 000 fewer than prior expectations, while initial captures included Maj Gen William F Dean and AP photographer Frank Noel.
Lists detailing 3,198 American and 4,361 other Allied prisoners of war in Korea were flown to Tokyo from Munsan Korea. Maj. Robert P. Hotaling, UN base camp commandant at Munsan, led the mission in a B-2 light bomber.
Edison School on Lake Avenue was the only public school building in the city system to close today as winter tightened its grip on the already frozen community. Lack of heat cited. continued on page 2.
Thirteen Elyria area registrants and one transfer from another local board answered the call to the military service. General Charles Marsh of 346 Cambridge Avenue was appointed leader of today’s group. Forty-eight other registrants are due at city hall tomorrow at 6 45 a m for preinduction physical and mental examinations.
Elyria City Council approved buying three major items for the city. The total for all equipment must not exceed 12 000 dollars, with other large items funded from the waterworks and improvement funds. A ditching and trenching machine tops the list at up to 12 000 dollars, plus a police cruiser replacement and library equipment. several other smaller purchases were authorized before adjournment.
Elyria High School A Cappella Choir conducts its 78 voice program Sunday at 3 PM in the school auditorium. Ed Hemminger, a bass, will be absent serving in the armed forces. Roy Ringwald's Song of Christmas leads a program featuring Gaul arrangements, Advent Motet, and Divine Praise with alumni chorus invited.
Checks totaling 129476.92 arrived for Cry Auditor Susiworth Albert from the state over two days. A prior check 118719.82 funded intangible and tangible personal tax collections placed in the general fund. A second 10765 from motor vehicle tax arrived today for salaries, gas, equipment parts and street repair materials.
