Detroit man becomes first to receive single dose prostate cancer radiotherapy
A 69-year-old man at Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak underwent the first world trial of single dose brachytherapy for prostate cancer on November 29. The outpatient procedure implants a rice grain sized radioactive pellet temporarily inside the tumor, delivering 15 minutes of radiation with no remaining radioactive material. Dr. Alvaro Martinez leads the study, seeking to prove a less invasive approach with fewer side effects. Martinez has treated four other Michigan men and has spent 18 years refining high-dose internal radiation for early and intermittent-stage tumors.
