U S District Judge Dan Aaron Polster lets a 2005 suit by Sarah Long against Lorain proceed claiming the city ignored sexual misconduct by officers including stalking by then Officer Jesus Sanchez. The city denies condoning abuse and will defend at trial.
Firefighters from Eaton Township Carlisle Township Grafton Township Columbia Township and Grafton fought a major blaze at a large outbuilding behind Tom Jorgensen’s home on Butternut Ridge Road starting around 6 a.m. The building housed wood motorcycles go karts and tractors and propane tanks were reported. Road closures lasted most of the morning with crews remaining on scene into the evening.

Elyria school board unanimously approves a contract with the teachers union providing three raises over 19 months starting Jan 1 2010 and ending July 31 2011. Base pay rises 2 percent then 1 percent in August and January, while health insurance co pays rise to 12.5 percent for teachers matching other district staff. A new certified evaluation process is included and negotiations for the next contract will start in spring 2011.
Neil Jalowiec 65 from Grafton, a 17 year Lorain Correctional Institution officer and Vietnam veteran, was killed in a Tuesday collision at Route 57 and West River Road Elyria. Emelio Hernandez Perez 23 of Elyria, the Jeep driver, was treated and released. Investigation ongoing.
Lorain County may add local funds to the $293,000 in federal stimulus money for Lorain County Transit. Commissioner Betty Blair said the panel will consider a final mix at today’s meeting. Administrator Jim Cordes warned that cuts could still occur even if the county contributes.
