Largest breach found in Earth's magnetic shield by Themis
NASA Themis satellites observed a major tear in the magnetosphere last summer, revealing a four thousand mile thick breach that lasted about an hour. UC Berkeley scientist Marit Oieroset noted the breach grew quickly and can permit solar wind to reach near Earth, though space weather mostly affects satellites and astronauts.
