Amherst reports the ninth grade proficiency test will be given to eighth graders at Nord Junior High during the week of March. The exam has five parts covering writing reading mathematics citizenship and science. Passing the ninth grade test is required for earning a high school diploma.
A ribbon cutting marked completion of major Mills Road improvements at Avon Belden Road. A new bridge replaced a deteriorating culvert, guard rails added, and 1.4 miles re striped along Mills Road and Stoney Ridge Road at a total cost around 322000 with state and city funding. City officials highlighted safety gains for frequent travelers including nursing home employees.
Elyria County expects more than 890000 from state Issue 2 to finance several projects next year. Two bridges north of Garfield Road and east of Pitts Road will be rebuilt or replaced at about 343000 of which 805000 is funded. Four roads will be resurfaced and berms added with about 551000 cost and 490000 funded. Sewer lines on Alton Drive and East Road cost 212000 with 94000 funded. Projects should finish by end of 1999.
Three people were injured Tuesday afternoon on state Route 58 when a southbound car struck a mailbox, then hit a northbound commercial vehicle and landed on its top after going airborne. All were taken by helicopter to Akron City Hospital in stable condition. names were unavailable.
