Lorain Faces Major Sewer Overhaul Guarded By Health Dept

Lorain may be forced to spend heavily to revamp its sewer system after the Ohio Department of Health warned of overloading the primary plant. Water Superintendent A V Agnew blamed ground water and storm water influx for the high volumes, while noting the plant’s design capacity is 10 million gallons per day and current usage nears 14 to 18 million at times. He cautioned that state demands could trigger costly, perhaps unnecessary, modifications.

Bus pact details being negotiated in Elyria school deal

The Elyria Board of Education is negotiating a draft bus contract with the city franchise holder. Lawyer for the franchise, Richard A Egg, and School Business Manager Paul Stewart said details will be shared soon and a mutually agreeable final draft is hoped. The contract links state transportation reimbursement to student rider numbers, and a drop in riders could raise costs for the board. Transportation for about 7 students is planned, but projections of 200 to 300 riders would reduce state aid and raise net costs. If administrators approve, a special session may be called before the next regular board meeting. Parents from Spring Valley and Lake Avenue areas pressed for service due to weather and long walks.

Bus franchise revamp eyed for Lorain city routes

Lorain council utilities committee sent a bus franchise ordinance to City Solicitor John Hritsko and owner Richard Egg for revamping. The proposal would define five routes including West and East Erie avenues and a Lorain-Midway Mall connection, with Egg pledging no subsidy and adjustments for large families as routes are tested for demand. Parker urged routes serving residents, not just profits, while Egg defended fare plans amid criticism of rate schedules and philosophy. A possible special council meeting could follow, with the next session slated for January 9.
