Bendix-Westinghouse auto plant ends strike three year pact

Day shift operations resume as union and company reach a three year contract. Local 971 UAW must ratify the agreement with a meeting tentatively set for January 4. About 1,000 hourly workers reported for duty while the October 15 start and December 15 1960 end dates are established. No shift premium increases were agreed and retroactive pay remains negotiable.

Temporary Break Seen in December Cold Wave

United Press International reports a warming trend moving from the plains may provide a temporary respite from a record December cold wave. Readings could rise 10 to 15 degrees, reaching the East but likely too late to save northern Florida crops. Overnight lows dropped to near or below zero from the Great Lakes to the Northeast, with frost risk across the Ohio Valley to the Gulf Coast.

In Baghdad a mob stoned the car carrying Assistant Secretary of State William C. Rountree as he traveled with a U.S. fact finding mission. Rountree escaped unharmed after the windshield was shattered. officials imposed secrecy on Baghdad movements amid reports of heightened tension and possible government upheaval.

New Township OKs Creation Amid Naming Row

Elyria city council approved forming a new township embracing the city with a split vote. The name Ely was struck after councilman Kellogg opposed the resolution as written, citing potential legal confusion with Elyria Township. The commissioners will decide the final name among Ely, Heman, Findley, Webber, Sharp, Elywood or Beebe at their first January meeting.

DiSalle Expected to Push End of Death Penalty

Gov elect Michael V. DiSalle, in Columbus, reiterated support for abolishing the death penalty. He said he opposed capital punishment during the campaign and before, arguing it was barbaric and not the answer to crime, according to the Toledo Democrat report.

One dead and 17 injured in Cleveland bus crash

A Cleveland city bus carrying Berea residents collided with a car on Rocky River Drive. Eugene W. Cameron, 31, a Ford plant clerk, died after his car was crushed beneath the bus. Fifteen other passengers were treated for minor injuries. Police and fire crews extricated the wreckage as the injured were sent to Berea Community and Fairview Park Hospitals. The accident prompted discussion of the death penalty in Ohio as lawmakers consider reform.

Five killed as girl’s scream spurs teen killer

In El Cajon California a 16 year old runaway admitted killing his benefactor wife and her four children after one child would not stop screaming. He led police to the home and to the bodies after being captured by an off duty officer. The suspect said he flipped his lid during the attack and targeted the family in a bid to “save the boy’s soul.” The victims were Lois Pendergast 37 and their children Allen 2 Diane 4 Thomas Jr. 6 and David 9. He was later taken into custody at the police station.

Delay Blamed In School Fire By Alarm Lapse

Chicago Fire Commissioner Robert Quinn testified at an inquest that a delayed fire alarm and a wrong address from the caller contributed to the Our Lady of the Angels School fire toll of 92 dead. He warned the alarm delay wasted precious evacuation time.

San Diego officer detains youth in killings scene

An off-duty police officer in San Diego, about 12 miles from the scene, arrested the peaceable youth who surrendered. The suspect cited a motive tied to the crying of Diane, a four-year-old slain child, as the trigger. Pendergast, an aircraft plant worker, was described as deeply religious, and had previously taken Eder into his home.

Hickey Named Forty Niners Coach in San Francisco

San Francisco awaited confirmation as Hickey was named new head coach of the Forty Niners replacing Frankie Albert who resigned last week. Hickey had been serving as an assistant coach.

Paris reports the Atlantic Pact Council unanimously rejected the Kremlin Berlin demand after John Foster Dulles voiced confidence the Soviet Union would not risk war.
