Plan to test gene transplant risks at Frederick lab

UPI reports NIH scientists plan a first of its kind animal test next month at the Frederick Cancer Research Center to see if foreign DNA can express harm in bacteria and infect mice and hamsters. A legal challenge seeks to halt the work over safety concerns as NIH weighs relaxing rules. an army lab loaned the facility for the study. The court action is filed by Ferdinand Mack on behalf of his two year old son.

Secret Cairo peace talks begin as differences surface

Israeli and Egyptian negotiators opened secret discussions in Cairo at the Mena House hotel shadowed by the pyramids. An Egyptian official said important questions were discussed and differences of opinion surfaced in a two hour session while both sides remained committed to a just and comprehensive Middle East peace. Talks with Begin in Washington were framed as moving the process forward with bilateral meetings planned over the weekend.

Kucinich orders Cleveland police back to work amid strike

In Cleveland, Mayor Dennis Kucinich denounced a sick call strike by about 75 of the 2200 police on overnight shifts over wages. He warned of illegal strike penalties including five day suspensions and possible pensionless discipline for continued violations. Patrolmen’s Association head William McNea spoke of department fever and pending contract talks with Safety Director James Barrett.

City revives programs dollar crisis easing in Elyria finance

Elyria moves out of fiscal crisis as city council hears early 1978 outlook. A half per cent income tax approved last June has raised about 639000 since July 1 and a 1 per cent tax netted 4091000 to total 4730043 for 1977. City plans include five new firefighters, street improvements, and equipment upgrades with bills paid up to date.

Record rainfall triggers flood woes in Lorain County area

Heavy rain and rapid snowmelt caused widespread flooding across Lorain and Cuyahoga counties. Rain totals reached 1.45 inches in 24 hours, with 1.59 inches overall by morning, submerging roads and basements. several county roads remained closed, including Station and Root roads, Sprague Road east of Jacquay, and Rt. 252 toward the county line.
