Reichlin urges city to buy church land for offices
Mayor Leonard P. Reichlin plans to urge Elyria City Council to purchase the former Church of the Open Door building on Lowell Street for about 15000. The move would ease crowded offices, provide a new entrance and parking at West Park, and allow relocating the municipal court clerk and utilities offices. If approved the church hall could host the municipal court with a drive in window for utility payments. The Lowell Street property may later become a recreation center once the Lorain County Courthouse becomes the city hall.

Use of probation brings drop in prison population
Ohio shows a sharp decline in inmate totals due to broader probation use and new facilities. Population at the Ohio Penitentiary fell under 2000 for the first time in decades, while statewide inmates total 9,633, down from 12,024 in 1965. Death row grows to 34 awaiting execution as courts debate abolition and executives hesitate to push capital punishment.
