Decision upheld on Lucas schools purchase ruling
The Ohio Supreme Court upheld the Richland County Court of Appeals ruling denying Lucas Local School District the right to buy electricity from Firelands Electric Cooperative. The dispute arose after the district stopped buying from the village of Lucas and sought cheaper power from Firelands. The village had sought a permanent injunction to prevent the district from diversifying sources, noting Lucas buys wholesale from Ohio Edison and resells to residents, while the district is its largest purchaser.

The Common Pleas granted a permanent injunction, the Court of Appeals affirmed, and the Supreme Court warned that allowing the school board’s contract would undermine municipal authority and bypass village consent.
