Patrols followed and stopped the vehicle as it released about 15 000 pounds of stone over 225 feet, causing road work to clear the berm. Fretz was arrested for spilling the load and for malfunctioning turn signals, taken to Amherst justice court where he declined to sign a waiver and was bound over to the grand jury before being released on bond.

Lorain County schools plan Christmas holiday breaks with varied dates. Elyria closes Friday and reopens January 3 along with Wellington and most county schools, except Avon Lake which ends December 22 and returns January 3. Lorain city schools follow similar schedule, while Oberlin and Amherst close Tuesday and reopen January 3.
United Nations broadcasters quoted Radio Peiping saying it could trade 11 imprisoned U.S. airmen for 35 Chinese students barred from leaving America. Diplomats see this as a possible parallel case to the UN censure of Red China for jailing airmen as spies.

State Welfare Department expected to provide 28,638 in matching funds to the county while current poor relief funds stand at 6,609, far short of monthly needs. December checks are out but January and February require ongoing funding. County anticipates 335,247 for January and part of February with state aid. February receipts include 247,000 from one excise tax and 115,000 from another for next year. Relief expenditures total about 38,000 monthly, with 21,000 disbursed to 243 cases for 576 individuals plus 17,080 more for blind, disabled, and dependent children programs.
Cleveland jurors heard Dr. Sam Sheppard deny beating his wife Marilyn and inflicting his own wounds as prosecutor John J. Mahon pressed with direct questions. Mahon accused him on the stand, while defense counsel challenged the questions. The cross examination included discussion of injuries, alleged affairs, and why he did not summon help or obtain weapons. The judge ruled on objections as the hearing moved toward possibly reaching a verdict by week’s end. Corrigan indicated four more witnesses may be called.
