Virginia star Ralph Sampson, though still recovering from flu, scored 30 points to lift No.7 Virginia past Duke 91-79. Coach Terry Holland noted Sampson remained weakened but pivotal in a 3-minute stretch that put the Cavaliers ahead.
Westlake narrowly escaped a late upset bid by North Olmsted 52-49 as the Demons, led by Jeff Lancashire and Dauer, held off a rallying Eagles in a tense North Olmsted gym. Dauer poured in 22 points while Michelich was limited by Brian Zapier. Westlake improves to 4-0, 2-0 in conference, next at Midview.
Avon Lake improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the league by defeating Fairview 76-50 as four Shoremen scored in double figures. Troy Smith led with 22 points before leaving with a leg injury. teammates Dave Kimmel and John Clark added 14 each, Terry Kehoe 12. Avon Lake heads to Southview next Tuesday while Rocky River travels to Westlake next Friday.
Olmsted Falls defeated Rocky River 59 to 47 as Pat Welsh 28 and Sylvester 23 led the Bulldogs. Rocky River had three players in double figures with Doug Miffers 16, Mark Sotak 11, and Bob Bes 10. Falls shot 51 percent to Rivers 43 percent, winning the battle at the line and on defense.
Westlake High School will sell 16mm film of its old football games next week. Athletic Director Bob Hersman says canisters cost about half the game price and are sold first come, first served. Available years include 1954 1959 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1969 1970 1971 1972 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977. Earl Campbell is noted as Houston Oilers star and 5 11 tall.

Wadsworth built a big second period cushion to beat Brunswick 91-58 in a Pioneer Conference boys game. The Grizzlies surged from a 21 20 first period tightness to score 70 points in the final three periods and bury the Blue Devils.
