Treasury drive for currency inflation gains momentum on Capitol Hill

Washington December 15 the drive for currency inflation gathered momentum on Capitol Hill and threatened to split open the money mood with President Roosevelt. Senator Thomas proposed seizing large potential profits from devaluation by requiring all gold to be delivered to the government and remonetizing at new dollar values the treasury would profit about 4.325 billion dollars if a 50 percent devaluation occurred. The plan would ban further gold coinage and melt gold into bars for redemption only in bars.

Two Ohio CWA Workers Killed in Separate Incidents

William Holly aged 50 of Sandusky was killed by an automobile as he left for work. John Casino aged 65 of Bellaire died from a dynamite blast on a CWA road job near Neffs. Each man left a widow and three children.

The forecast calls for cloudy skies with light snow tonight and in extreme north portions. Thursday will bring slightly milder conditions in the east and somewhat colder readings in the west.

Coast Guard probes burning tanker after Pacific loss near Point Pinos

Coast Guard cutters and survey boats hunted a storm wreck near Point Pinos where a burning tanker and wreckage were seen after distress flares. No bodies found. Several tankers reported safe, including the Emidio, and Lurline relayed word of flames.

Banks Await Federal Action on Elyria Deposits Plan

Conservator A. J. Robinson and J. B. Seward report two local banks have filed data with the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and await Washington approval. A plan would allow 50 percent of restricted deposits to be released now with the rest as liquidity improves, enabling a return to more normal service in Elyria.

Kiwanis To Hear Sanatorium Head At Elyria Meeting

Lorain county tuberculosis sanatorium work explained to Elyria Kiwanis Club members tomorrow at noon. Dr. A N Smith, superintendent, will speak at the Hotel Newell. The club plans its annual Christmas party for children and their mothers. Presents will be given to the children.

The committee expects bank reopening soon but not before January first and notes RC decisions in Washington will determine actions. In Columbus Ohio the legislature tilts toward Governor White as House and Senate committees pass the liquor bill favoring a state monopoly. A tied vote defeated McCluskey’s amendment to strip monopoly provisions in the House, and the Senate panel backed the administration bill. Debate and probes into lobbyist activity were shelved as the fight continues on the floor.

Mayor To Greet Santa Claus At Four O'clock Tomorrow

Santa Claus will arrive by plane Just Tony at La Porte airport between three and four tomorrow afternoon. He will be welcomed and escorted to City Hall where Mayor W. H. Vanoster will present him the key to the city at four o clock. Police will escort Santa on a motorcycle as he travels through Elyria visiting downtown streets and Ely Park before the official welcome and informal visits with local children.

Burglary Attempt Alleged by Two New York Youths

Two youths Henry A. Anna 24 of Buffalo and Norman J. Gibbon 18 of Elton faced burglary charges after allegedly attempting to break into the Johnson Oil Company service station at Prospect and West Lorain streets Oberlin. They pleaded not guilty and bond was set at 2500 pending Friday hearing.

Lindberghs Plan West Indian Island Flight Homeward

Col and Mrs Charles A Lindbergh prepared to depart Port of Spain Trinidad at daybreak to fly north along the West Indies toward Florida and home. The couple arrived off Venezuela amid heavy rains and then stayed indoors at Government House with no formal reception. The proposed route spans the Windward and Leeward Islands, the Lesser Antilles and the Greater Antilles including Puerto Rico Haiti and Cuba.

Charges Dismissed in Embezzlement Case In Detroit

Embezzlement charges against Michael Denewsth and Jack Brown of Detroit were dismissed by Justice Joseph Petro at the request of Carl Puke. The pair faced $5,000 in fancy wines stolen from a $21,000 cargo en route from Buffalo to Chicago, alleged to be missing after the truck went into a ditch west of Lorain. Duke, an amell of the tracking concern, led the investigation.

Three Die When Car Submerged In Cuyahoga River

The bodies of Capt. Frank Sammons, his wife Gertrude, and John Murphy were found in a car raised from the Cuyahoga river in Cleveland. The trio disappeared after the sedan slid off a dock near the Steamer Fontana on Monday night. Sammons, 39, skipper of the steamer Pam Schneider, his wife 37, a nurse and mother of two, and Murphy, 42, chief engineer of the steamer Marquette, were drowned inside the locked car.
