Crash Kills 258 On DC-8 Flight From Middle East

A DC-8 charter carrying 258 U.S. servicemen and crew home for Christmas crashed on takeoff at Gander International Airport. All aboard were killed. The plane carried members of the 101st Airborne returning to Fort Campbell Kentucky. No survivors reported by Maj Kenneth Miller Canadian Search and Rescue. Witnesses described a large explosion observed near the airport amid light snow and overcast skies. The Pentagon said there were more than 250 military personnel aboard but no dependents. Investigations by civilian authorities were under way.

Squeeze could trim Elyria sewer rate hikes

Elyria officials seek thrifty financing to lower forecast rate increases for sewer projects. Auditor Beverly Renner and Deputy Auditor Paul Sweetrich study bond options and credit rating improvements, with Ohio Water Development Authority offering low interest loans. Project costs reach up to 60 million dollars, 18.3 million grant from EPA, and rates may rise to 14 dollars monthly by 1986 and 27 by the early 1990s.

Reagan still fights GOP bid on tax reform setback

Former Wellington principal awarded $200000

A federal jury awarded Ayers Ratliff 200000 in damages in a suit against the Wellington school board and Superintendent James McGlamery over his 1984 nonrenewal. The board's liability was 100000 in compensatory damages, McGlamery 50000 compensatory and 50000 punitive. Ratliff had alleged due process and free speech violations.
