Brezhnev Ends India Visit After Four Days

Soviet President Leonid Brezhnev, tired and aged, flew home from India after a four day state visit failing to win New Delhi’s backing for the Afghan war. He outlined a five point Persian Gulf peace plan and urged restraint while accusing outside interference in Afghanistan. Brezhnev, age 73, waved from the Aeroflot jet as he left New Delhi. The plan urged non deployment of bases and weapons, respect for Gulf states, non interference in internal affairs, and free trade without embargoes. Washington dismissed the proposal as not new or different. Brezhnev said Soviet troops would not withdraw until Afghanistan crisis ends.
