A powerful thunderstorm and multiple tornadoes struck Fort Walton Beach, Tyndall and surrounding towns. At least one person died, nine were seriously hurt, and about 400 were left homeless as 50 to 220 homes were damaged or destroyed. Damage totals exceed 6.5 million across Okaloosa and nearby counties.
A 69 year old Cleveland hunter Curtis Hargrove was struck and killed by a freight train on the Akron Canton and Youngstown line west of New London in Huron County while locating hunting dogs along Euclid and Townline Roads. The train engineer reported the man hesitated on the tracks before impact. The coroner cited head injuries as the cause.

UPI reports U S armored personnel carriers from the 1st Cavalry Division broke a North Vietnamese trap to rescue South Vietnamese troops on the Bong Son plain in a six day battle. US and allied forces reported high enemy casualties and continued fighting near Saigon with air support and ground assaults on coastal positions.
Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company outlines a 350 million expansion to raise kilowatt output by 60 percent by 1972. Avon Lake adds a 625000 kilowatt turbo generator with 1968 spending of 35.8 million and a 70 million total program started February 1966. Eastlake site to add 625000 kilowatt plant completing by 1972.
Twelve jurors nine men and three women were seated tentatively on day three of the first degree murder trial of William J. Stuart 30 Sheffield Lake. The state has used one of six preemptory challenges and an alternate will join the panel. The killing occurred Oct 5 at Bever ly Stuart’s home in Sheffield Lake. The three Stuart children Cindy 11 Billy 9 Jeffrey 7 are expected to testify. Stuart was living with his sister in Warrensville Heights and worked as a machine operator in a Cleveland plant.
