Lorain County courts show 353 grand jury indictments this year with 82 secret ones aimed at drug offenses. Secret indictments are issued without suspects knowing, enabling police to arrest long after crimes.

Only 19 of the secret documents remain in the files and one indictment from 1971 and one from 1967 are unserved. The Lorain County sheriff's department leads arrests with deputies occasionally assigned to seek those on the wanted list. Indictments cover felonies from larceny to murder. If needed, the FBI joins under federal fugitive law to secure quick results or long pursuits. A case decades past saw a mother raped and killed. fingerprints led to the killer in California, who was returned for trial and executed. Old indictments are usually dismissed but may be revived if arrests occur.
