Weather Blamed In 4 Deaths Across Ohio

Polar weather brought record sub zero temperatures to Ohio with at least four deaths linked to the cold and related fires. Freezing hydrants hampered firefighting while snow blanketed Ashland and Conneaut with two feet. Akron Canton Airport logged 11 below. A home fire near Ashley killed 13 year old Jimmy Curtis Jr. Rodney Cade, 18 months, died in a separate blaze.

School Bond Bids Opened For Elyria Project

Six bids for the $1,865,093 Elyria City school building and site issue were opened at noon in the board of education room. All bids quoted 3.75 percent interest, varying only in premiums offered. Bidders included Northern Trust Chicago $32,990, Braun Toledo $28,914, Nuveen Cleveland $26,332.40, Phelps Fenn New York $23,620.64, Halsey Stuart Chicago $15,333, and Baxter Cleveland $5,252. The bid will be awarded at tonight's board meeting.

Amherst Chief Dies Answering Fire Call

Amherst fire chief Charles R. Edwards, 58, of 238 South Main Street, died of a heart attack while answering a fire alarm at about 4:05 a.m. He collapsed after entering the station to respond to a minor chimney fire on Quarry Road. Edwards had led the department nine years and was active in village affairs in his 38 years of service.

More Snow Predicted For Oswego

Oswego N Y endures a fresh blizzard with a forecast of a foot of snow. A severe cold wave stretches to the East as Oswego, already under a state of emergency, battles drifts 20 feet high and roofs threaten collapse.
