Council Acts To Meet Relief Situation Here
In a special session last night the council voted to empower the administration to hire a relief investigator and a stenographer to assist Mrs. Marie S Gilman in direct relief for the year. Councilman Elmer Nelson opposed, charging waste and shouting across the chamber as the measure failed to pass as an emergency with seven present. Others supporting the move were Kennedy, Thompson, Noter, Scott, Henke and Lautenschleger. Fisk and Smith were absent. The plan called for $5 monthly for the investigator, $15 monthly automobile allowance, and $65 monthly for a stenographer. Mrs. Gilman is funded by Associated Charities, not the city. Nelson alone voted no, and the motion to adjourn sparked him to further protests as President Ives tried to quiet the session. The measure was placed on the agenda for a possible reconvening today.
