Wildlife rescuers balance care with wild release in Ohio
Claudia and Rick Sabr run wildlife rehabilitation licensed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the U S Fish and Wildlife Service. They wash contaminated birds with saline to remove pollutants, avoid imprinting by never keeping animals as pets, and release healed creatures to preserve wild behavior. They face thinning release sites as wetlands expand and worry about future conservation funding while stressing they do not profit from the animals and may euthanize when needed.
