Ohio rally urges state to spare church schools
About 8 000 fundamentalist Christians gathered on the Columbus statehouse steps to demand that Ohio keep church schools. Gov. Rhodes voiced support for parental choice in education and pledged to meet church leaders. The protest followed court action attempting to declare certain children neglected for not attending an accredited school. The ACLU signaled support, while clergy warned of broader religious freedom battles across states.

Pro posed family care bill faces charges of government control
Supporters of a three year 1.85 billion family and child care bill defend it against charges it infringes on parental rights. Congressional and faith groups dispute claims the plan would compel preschool at age three or expand government influence over religion. Mondale calls the attacks distorted. The measure would fund day care prenatal health nutrition handicapped and minority services and aid families with special needs.
