Philippine rebels say peace hinges on U.S. base closures
Communist negotiators warned lasting peace is impossible without closing U.S. bases in the Philippines and said a dispute over patrols could derail a cease-fire set to begin this week. The 60 day truce signed Nov. 27 by President Aquino’s government and the National Democratic Front is to start Wednesday as talks on land reform political change and base status begin. The army reported two soldiers killed and six wounded in ambushes in Zambales and Abra during the cease-fire period. The Front reps reiterated their demand to end U.S. bases and criticized military plans to continue base patrols during the truce.
