Doll that coos and sobs drives toy boom in recession
In a bold pivot from planes to plush, Benjamin Michton created a life-size sobbing doll with latex body and a clarinet reed throat. A 10 dollar clothing set and 25 dollar price tag propelled sales, aided by a 30,000 dozen behind on Christmas orders, while a boy doll outsold a girl doll three to one. The story links to Teddy Bear nostalgia and a family history dating to Morris Michton’s immigrant roots and a Roosevelt connection.
