Washington dispatch reports a new wave of business aid proposals and persistent opposition to crop controls slowing the farm bill. Senate action is stalled with only a small portion of the 100 page measure discussed. leaders expect possible delays into January.
Lorain County prosecutor Howard R. Butler indicated the grand jury hearing the Grafton murder inquiry may review vice conditions in Lorain Elyria and the county. He referenced police reports from Lorain on raids for gambling and vice and noted Kayria police conducted four raids with three arrests but had not yet submitted their reports. A county jail prisoner’s testimony to the jury sparked the probe into race bookies in Elyria and Lorain.
The 70 foot fishing boat Sunlight sank 15 miles south of San Francisco after a collision with the Purse Seiner Three Stars. Twenty three men were endangered. eleven Sunlight crew members were rescued by the Three Stars and brought to San Francisco.

C O Schmitkons will be guest speaker at the City Club dinner meeting at the Graystone Hotel at 6 39 p m Thursday. He will show pictures from a trip from New York to California via the Panama Canal and return to Elyria via Yellowstone National Park.
Japanese forces bombarded Nanking from air land and water as infantry assaults failed. They attacked from three sides near the east gate while Chinese defenders withdrew inside. Foreign observers predicted a final push toward the east wall and imminent fall of the capital with plans to seize other Chinese ports after Nanking.
Four month conflict in China has produced about 440000 military deaths and wounds, 100000 civilian casualties in Shanghai, $1.5 billion in property losses and over $1 million in damages to 25 American firms, with figures rising as surveys complete.
Noel Petree, a leader in recreational work at Toledo, will address the Lorain County Council of Parent-Teacher Associations during the evening session of its winter meeting at Henrietta School on January 11. The afternoon program is led by Lorain County teachers with Mrs. Edna Taylor as chair, and the Henrietta School Orchestra will provide music. A 6:30 p.m. dinner will be served by Henrietta P T A.
A new cold wave spread east from the Rockies causing subnormal temperatures from eight below zero in North Dakota to 20 above in the deep south. Snow blanketed much of the northern states and drifting snow halted highways. Florida citrus crops were damaged lightly, truck gardens up to 40 percent, and several Dixie residents died from exposure or traffic accidents amid hazardous conditions.
Thousands of Chinese workers were drafted to support Gener alissimo Chiang Kai-Shek as Beijing prepared a final defense of Nanking. The Panay was to be positioned to evacuate 13 Americans who refused to leave, while Chinese forces pulled back to east gate positions. Officials denied reports that Purple Mountain had fallen or that munitions dumps were being detonated.
Contributions for the Elyria Toy Shop are now being received. The first forty gifts total $60.00, with a $500.00 goal. Capt. Hillier of the Salvation Army hopes for full contributions to reach that amount. About 900 to 1,000 toys will be distributed.
The dispute between Sheriff William F. Grall and County Commissioner Oscar G. Dunn centers on a $18 bill for jail cleaning and painting. Grall says the extra 11 trustee meals cost 10 cents each. Dunn, backed by union objections, withholds approval, citing lack of commissioners’ consent. Davidson and DeChant favor union labor, while Dunn argues authorization was improper.
Federal Reserve Governor Marriner S Eccles told the Senate Banking Committee that current inducements may fail to attract private capital for Roosevelt’s housing program. He proposed tax exemption for three percent FHA debentures and a higher five percent interest rate to improve returns after taxes. He warned the plan is not a panacea and urged cost reductions, noting labor and material costs drive higher mortgage rates.
Common Pleas Judge D A Cook presides as 126 citizenship applicants are examined, one of the county's largest classes. Examinations began yesterday by Naturalization Examiners 4H. Ewing and Phillip Leighton. Certificates will be issued Friday at the Elks Hall and December 21 at Hawthorne school Lorain.
Service Director I D Faxon reports three ponds at Hamilton Jefferson and McKinley schools are being flooded and will be usable in about two days if cold weather persists. A small amount of water is added today to freeze first before full filling. Other potential ponds include The American Legion site opposite Abbe Road School and a West Side location if a suitable lot is found.
Voters in the Russia Township School District backed a two mill levy for two years by more than four to one at a special election held at Ober ly Grange Hall. The measure passed 86 to 21 to cover overdue tuition to Oberlin Board of Education and debts to the Teachers Retirement System while supporting township school bus operations amid dispersed students attending Oberlin schools.
Probate Judge H H Nye announced the January disbursement of Aid for Dependent Children funds will be made about a week earlier than usual to aid beneficiaries during the holiday. About 9100 dollars will be distributed to 260 adults and 643 children between Christmas and New Years, not as extra pay but the same January amount.
Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden told the House of Commons that Britain will not recognize the insurgents right to blockade the Spanish coast and warned them against interfering with British shipping. He said British shipping will continue to be protected.
Four of five cases tried before Judge Guy B. Findley were affirmed by the District Appellate Court. Reversals occurred in the Harvey Leach versus J C Penney personal injury suit and in the Halleck Shepherd versus George Payser non support matter. The court also upheld verdicts for Clara Robson, George Mengel, and Austin O Toole in related actions.
Ras E. Ross 35 and Harold Riley 29 leaders of a sheep rustling gang were bound over to the grand jury on larceny charges. They pleaded not guilty to stealing 64 lambs from Edward C. Turner near Columbus. Sheriff Gorman Clark said a warrant exists for Ross' wife, also implicated. Jean Blake 17, present at arrest, to be sent to Canton custody with her mother.
Miss Alice Geide, 17, of Elyria, among four riding in a roadster that plunged into an eight foot deep pool, remains in serious condition at Elyria Memorial Hospital with pneumonia and was placed under an oxygen tent as of yesterday.
The House Ways and Means Committee abandoned all proposals to tax salaries of state and municipal employees and to tax interest from tax exempt securities. The move followed Monday's Supreme Court decision in the Dravo case that federal contracts profits are taxable federally, effectively closing options to tax government salaries or securities. Chairman Vinson noted estimated potential revenue of 155 million annually from these taxes and said no recommendations would be made.
Leroy Richardson of Charleston West Virginia was killed by Patrolman Glenn Miller on the Akron Colorado high school campus as students headed to class. A 10 minute struggle followed before Richardson, in a stolen car reported from Charleston on Nov 20, was shot. Police recovered rifles handcuffs license plates and burglar tools in the automobile. A janitor had seen Richardson sleeping in the coupe before the shooting.
Eight burley truck drivers drank beer and whiskey for five hours as part of driving ability tests. Analysts called the session unscientific yet noted a few results. The gaggle of tasters led to laughter and confusion over who was being tested and who was drinking. Nobody knows how the drivers got home.
