UAW Drops Strike Deadline in Bargaining With Ford

The United Auto Workers dropped a midnight strike deadline against Ford as bargaining continued for a new contract covering 166,000 workers. The Ford Council voted to meet again at 9:30 a.m. with no new deadline set while unresolved issues include retroactivity and wage levels.

Mother of four dies in Route 6 crash near Beaver Creek

LORAIN A 39 year old mother of four died early yesterday when her car spun out of control on a curve near Oakpoint Road and plunged into Beaver Creek. She was pronounced dead at 8 07 am at St Joseph Hospital. She returned from work at McGarveys Boat Drive-In in Vermilion about 5 30 am when the eastbound sedan traveled at a very high rate of speed and struck seven guard posts, sheered off a utility pole, struck a gas pump and spilled gasoline before tumbling into the creek. Divers helped recover the body as firefighters washed down gasoline and Ohio Edison workers guarded a downed line. She is survived by her husband and four children.

Winds topple national Yule tree near White House

The 1970 National Christmas tree, a 78-foot spruce from the Black Hills, lay on its side after weekend winds up to 34 mph buffeted the Capital area. The freight train delivering it derailed twice but the tree remained unharmed. Police report ripped guy lines and scaffolding, no injuries, lighting ceremony Dec. 16 uncertain.

Radio operator testifies Calley shot priest

Charles Sledge testified that Lt William Calley Jr shot a priest in the face at close range and then killed a baby tossed into a ditch after Calley and a sergeant fired on 20 to 30 civilians in My Lai in March 1968. Where is Hughes political power struggle roils Nevada

LAS VEGAS deputies searched the Desert Inn penthouse of Howard Hughes over the weekend after reports he had been kidnapped or harmed. A spokesman said the search found nothing. Hughes’ doctor said he could not be moved due to pneumonia, anemia, and a heart condition.
