In Lorain two of three emergency cases treated at St Joseph Hospital were kitchen accidents. Earl Burkey, 9, of 4141 Pearl Ave, treated for a forehead bruise after a chair fall. Gladys Unger, 29, of 328 W 14th St, treated for burns on a leg from hot grease while removing a roast. Kenneth Ehast, 13 months, of 1852 E 31st St, treated for finger abrasions after catching his hand in a door.
Rep. Leslie M. Burge of Lorain County is elected majority whip and caucus secretary of the Ohio House, defeating Rep. George A. Meinhart of Meigs County. He has held the post for three years as the new speaker, Rep. Roger Cloud of Logan County, stresses the school problem as a top agenda item. The GOP named Cloud as speaker and Rep. Kline L. Roberts from Columbus as speaker pro tem and majority floor leader.
A Ridgeville High senior Bernard Machovina, 17, is hospitalized in Cleveland with polio, joining his brother Ralph in poor condition and on an iron lung. The Machovina family reports a third polio death of infant Charles Machovina Jr. at Elyria Memorial Hospital. This brings Lorain County’s total polio cases for the year to 48, with 37 cases reported last year.
Mrs Richard Schwartz complained to police about restaurant prices a dinner cost her over $30. She noted wearing a $500 Persian lamb coat entering and a $200 coat leaving, accusing someone of switching coats during the meal.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles said there is less fear of a shooting war now than in the past. He told reporters the Cold War has shifted to the economic field for the time being but military strength must be kept up until disarmament progresses. He urged greater private capital investment in allied countries to replace heavy reliance on government aid.
Colson Corp plans full operation of its $300000 Woodford Avenue plant by January 2. The Albion, Michigan, shutdown shifted all equipment to Elyria facilities, centralizing truck production at Woodford and gall caster work at Cedar and Pine. Rufus Taylor said about 180 workers have been hired since March, boosting Elyria plants to over 600 employees. A dedication and open house are planned, with date around the new year.
United Nations in New York reports 16 allied nations condemnation of Red China for trial and jailing of US flyers, calling it a violation of the Korean armistice and prisoner exchange agreement. Henry Cabot Lodge delivered the resolution to Dag Hammarskjöld, urging ongoing efforts to secure repatriation by December 31, 1954.
Secretary of State Ted W. Brown officially confirmed George H. Bender's win over Thomas A. Burke in Ohio by 2,970 votes after a recount in about 8800 precincts across 25 of 88 counties. Bender totaled 1,257,874 to Burke's 1,234,904 as the canvassing board approved the result, the narrowest margin since 1892.
Arnold Keller of 1836 West River Road was selected to the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation board for a three year term at the annual Columbus meeting. Keller, a greenhouse operator and truck gardener, led Lorain County Farm Bureau as president for three terms and has held Elyria Township Board of Education seat for seven terms. He previously worked on the Institute of Inter-American Affairs Brazil project during World War I with funding by Nelson Rockefeller. Keller now presides over the Northern Ohio Truck Gardeners Association.
City council approves pay raises for municipal workers and accepts commuter report. Traffic surveys underway as city pursues water system improvements and upcoming construction plans.
Officials of the State Fire Marshal's Division investigated a fire that destroyed the Lorain County Club west of Lorain last night. The loss was estimated well over 50 000 including building and contents. Thirty seven firefighters battled the blaze into morning with water drawn from a creek and five hydrants. The fire, fanned by wind, started in the basement of the old farmhouse portions of the club and its exact origin remained undetermined. Owner Elfrieda Carlson survived at a relative's home nearby with only the clothing she wore.
Visiting policeman Milo Clarence of Bremerton loses police uniform after thieves break into his car in downtown Vancouver theft. The incident underscores rising crime in the city as authorities investigate the break in.
