157,264 Workers To Be Hired For 1950 Census

The Census Bureau announced plans to hire 157,264 temporary workers for the 1950 census. Applications will be accepted at 450 district headquarters in January and February for 140,000 enumerators, 8,300 crew workers, 450 district supervisors, 14 area supervisors and 8,500 temporary headquarters staff. About 150 million people are expected to be counted. The census will also inquire into home conditions and, for the first time, collect income data from every fifth adult, sparking opposition from Rep. Clarence Brown who argues it invades privacy. The bureau says income figures are legally required and kept confidential even from other government agencies.
