Rushmore Peak Named After New Yorker Charlie Rushmore
In the Black Hills of South Dakota the highest peak was christened Rushmore in honor of Charles Rushmore, a 24 year old New Yorker who represented the Harney Peak Mining Company. Cowboys and locals urged naming the mountain after him, a dedication carried forward by his daughter Jenn Rushmore Wilson. The carving at Mount Rushmore was begun by Gutzon Borglum and completed by his son, depicting Washington Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt. President Coolidge presided over the tools ceremony, declaring the monument will be viewed by future generations.
