Pinot Blanc: A Plain Yet Pleasing Dry White Wine

Pinot blanc is a widely misunderstood dry white wine gaining popularity for value. Monterey County dominates California plantings as cool climates suit the grape. Mirassou briefly renamed it White Burgundy in 1971 before returning to Pinot Blanc. Wente and other California producers offer fruity, oakless profiles, while Chalone and Ventana in Monterey pursue richer, oakier styles. J Lohr experiments with oak aging, but pinot blanc remains best in its own light, affordable form. A correction notes the 1977 Sonoma Vineyards River West Zinfandel price at 12.85, not the previously stated value.
