Germany opens trial of former SS officer Viel
The 78 year old Julius Viel went on trial in Ravensburg accused of seven counts of murder for killings of Jewish inmates at the Theresienstadt camp during spring 1945. He denies the charges saying he was not in the area and cannot remember the events. Prosecutors rely on a new witness statement and expect a verdict in February at the earliest.
