Two of Nation's Best Known Fliers Killed
In Miami on December 4 Richard Archibald completed a non stop flight from San Diego to Pan American air port. Two famed speed pilots Rudy Kling and Frank Haines were killed when their planes lost control during the Silva trophy race. Spectators witnessed the crashes as teams and records continued to be pursued despite the tragedy. Jacqueline Cochran Odlum set a new New York to Miami speed record of four hours, 12 minutes, 28 seconds, surpassing Howard Hughes.

Two Hamilton Teachers Hurt in Auto Crash
Two Hamilton school teachers were injured when their car collided head on with another vehicle on Oberlin road near Lasrnrres road at 9 15 p m. Miss Mary Elizabeth Thomas of 415 Third street and Miss Susie Drake of 126 Erie etred were treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital. Thomas had a deep scalp laceration while Drake suffered fractured ribs and was kept in the hospital. The other driver was Walter Bischoff of 22 Stanford avenue, and Chris Gable of Avon Lake also reported injuries from a second collision.

Electric Car Collision Claims Two Lives in Avon Lake
August Quast, 35, and Irene Quast, 31, managers of Central Laundry Co of Lorain, died in a crash on Jaycox road Avon Lake when their car collided with a Lake Shore trolley at 9 45 p m. The collision derailed the trolley, snapped an electric pole, and toppled it. Six other passengers escaped injury. The couple, who lived on Stop 49 Avon Lake, were returning home in a light laundry truck whose body was demolished. Their daughter was at home with a caregiver. Bodies were taken to Schwartz Funeral Home.

The Elyria Toy Shop for Christmas relief started strong as the K. of C. Toy Shop handed in $21.80 from last year’s balance. Captain Hillier of the Salvation Army said cooperation is growing. About $500 is expected to be raised through milk bottle collections, local industry donations, and individual gifts. Approximately 900 toys will be distributed this Christmas after careful verification of needy child lists.

Grand jury returns 29 indictments from 38 cases with two autoists charged in fatal crashes. Begin Planning For Distribution Of Christmas Baskets
Elyria groups met to plan this years Christmas dinner basket drive. The Not In Empty Stocking Committee held its first 1937 meeting and set a 7 p.m. Friday gathering in City Hall for invited organizations to send representatives. Captain Henry Hillier of the Salvation Army, committee secretary, said 210 baskets were handed out last year and at least that many are likely needed again, with cooperation continuing to avoid duplication of effort.
